Rita evaluates and interpret soils and soil-related data for the purpose of understanding soil resources as they contribute to not only agricultural production, but as they affect environmental quality and as they are managed for protection of human health and the environment.

Soil scientists examine the composition of soil, how it affects plant or crop growth, and how different soil treatments affect crop productivity. Plant scientists develop improvements to crop yields and ways to enhance plant production, including controlling weeds and pests.

Soil functions include: air quality and composition, temperature regulation, carbon and nutrient cycling, water cycling and quality, natural “waste” (decomposition) treatment and recycling, and habitat for most living things and their food. We could not survive without these soil functions.
